U.P Travelogue: Going East

This is a little travel movie Monihan put together from our trip to Asia last month. I was invited to speak at Qi Global, a Singapore based conference on sustainable innovation and social entrepreneurship. Despite the massive jet lag, it was exhilarating to be around so many people doing remarkable things in the world. The first-of-its-kind stock exchange for social enterprises, a man obsessed with toilets transforming sanitation for the developing world, a chocolate produced in the Congo that brings together former adversaries, a graphic design group transforming the faces of cities with positive posters, a self-sustaining green school in Bali, a parliament led by teenagers in East Timor… You can read all about the conference at qi-global.com.
A very special thank you to Kristine & Paul, and the rest of the Qi team for being such marvelous hosts. And thanks to Jared for the opportunity to speak at SMU, Olivia for all the introductions, Nigel and Rachel for hanging with us at the skatepark, and Calvin and Arlette for showing us the “other” Singapore. I miss my Kaya toast!
We also had a stop over in Tokyo, and let me tell you, Japan doesn’t play around. In the 5 days we spent there, U.P supporters were able to organize and squeeze in interviews with Ecocolo, Greenz.jp and Alterna, a radio appearance with J-wave, and a lecture for the School of Fair Trade organized by People Tree. But we did have enough free time to make a pilgrimage to Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki’s magical museum. We also got to go to a proper, old-school Onsen. And yes, it’s true, food in Japan is on a whole other level of tasty.
Big thanks to Koko, Michiko, Yukiko, Nami, Shike and our lovely friends Reo and Yasuko (and Cambo!) for putting us up and showing us how Tako Yaki is made.
Can’t wait until next time! Love from New York.
