Day 5

I Wear Polka Dots more than I Realized

Another drizzly day, and I’m test driving this super long Preloved scarf and mitts combo, donated again by eBay’s Green Team. The mitts seem to be perfectly made for small girl hands. Being from Manitoba originally I feel I’m extra qualified to comment on mitts, having worn them almost 6 months out of the year while growing up.

I’m wearing a trench I picked up while in Hong Kong 7 years ago, a polka dotted tank and a raw silk jacket I designed for a company I once worked for. Wooly socks and army boots are keeping me warm under the dress… which I’ve worn as a skirt today by unbuttoning the bodice and folding it into the skirt. A vintage fabric belt and a necklace of my own design (the Coconut Spike necklace) finish things off.

Saw some kids on the way to the studio today and it made me think about how thankful the kids in the video made by Free the Children are…

this is what they said about their old school:

“I went to the old school it was very dark,”
“I didn’t like it at all, it was muddy”

and of their new school:

“In the new school a nice breeze comes,”
“even the light comes”

I love what you are coming up with! So inventive! The fullness and shape of the skirt is really awesome. Well done.

I think you’re my favourite yet! Totally unique and inspirational! What does the dress look like worn open?

So fun! I agree and also enjoy your whimsy. Love it with and without the trench, but the trench is great. Still not sure I could pull off a long dress like you can but like seeing your daily fashion experiments.

Charlotte – Don’t worry, I definitely have plans of wearing it open one day…I’m going to try to wear it really differently every day until I run out of ideas…hopefully I can keep going all month, this dress has SO many options!

Love the boots and socks , warm toes make for a happy day.

The video is heartbreaking but also inspirational – everyone needs their eyes opened to the child/bonded/forced labour that is so often behind cheap products. If only they had videos of the producers working alongside the products in our shops we could all make better choices. In the meantime look out for fairtrade labelled clothes ( in the UK at least). Brilliant work Angie and U.P.

Very cute, I like it best without the trench. It’s awesome that you design clothes and accessories.

Love it! Do you know if this dress will go in the UP Store? I do hope so. BTW, thank you for discussing your body type. It’s just about like mine. I’ve stopped looking at discouraging fashion images and now I just come to UP. Teeny tiny 17 year old fashionistas from lookbook.nu were hurting my soul.

I love your take on things. I admit that I was skeptical when I first saw your black dress, but you’ve already done so much with it. Can’t wait to see what you do next.

I love your style. So comfortable, unique, and funky. It’s attainable, too. I can actually imagine wearing some of these outfits.

I could never imagine myself in a long black dress, but it looks so right on you! Very different and interesting.
The video you posted just makes me realize how fortunate we all are, and how little those beautiful kids need to be happy.
P.S. And may I just add, you are gorgeous!

Thanks for sharing the video! That section at the beginning about the price of a sari and the child’s wages was so telling. This is why sustainable fashion must also be fair trade fashion. My children’s clothes are all hand-me-downs and secondhand, but still I cringe at the thought that my children may be clothed with clothing made by child slaves.
