Day 1

Back in Black

It’s Day 1 of my LBD pilot and I’m running to catch a plane at LGA to Columbia, SC. I’m keynoting at the University of South Carolina on the topic of Sustainable Design and creative ways to communicate social awareness.

Perfect timing.

Rest assured I’ll be giving a little shout out to the UP and charity: water, the organization which we’ll be raising money for during the next 31 days to build wells in areas that don’t have access to clean drinking water.

It was uberfun dreaming up the design of the dress with Terri and Sandy of Carasan Designs. I did a little blog post on my site giving a little “behind-the-scenes” synopsis on design/sourcing, (which was conveniently done on our site Source4Style, which is a place where designers can source and discover more sustainable materials for their collections).

I’ll be giving some mad shout outs throughout March but I want to send out some early “thank yous” to Sheena + Tara for including me in this great project; to Terri + Sandy for the amazing dress; to Mark Cecic-Karuzic and Rory Gunderson who will be providing their creativity through the photographic lens; charity: water for what they do best: Giving people around the world access to clean water; Payless ShoeSource for matching funds (up to $10K and giving gift certificates for everyone who donates $10 or more); and everyone online who tunes in, reads and gives to the project.

Here’s to Uniform Project: March edition!

This dress is gorgeous all by itself! I can’t wait to see what you do with it over the course of this month. <3

So wait… these are all the same dress? And you can expose the pink part if you want but you don’t have to? Interesting. I like it a lot. I think it might look better in a non-glossy fabric, but I love the look overall and the flexibility is abfab.

So excited to be a part of this project everyone. I have some amazing looks I’ll be pulling together (as I couldn’t already help experimenting). Terri and Sandy of Carasan designs got this to me early so I could play around with it. It can be worn AT LEAST a dozen practical ways. Not enough days in the month!

So cool! I definitely would like to see it in a more matte fabric but I’m loving the line. Can’t wait to see the looks this month!

This dress is absolutely incredible. LOVE the fabric, LOVE what you can do with it (and I’m sure we’re only seeing the tip off the iceberg here)

Thanks all for supporting this project. We are glad that you all love the dress. We had fun working with Summer and the UP on this.
The dress is in a Hemp and Silk blend, but I am not sure what the black dress will be made in for production. Please leave them feed back on what you would like to see it made in. WE LOVE the fabric. We love Summer in it, but we have always loved dressing Summer. Look for the goodies we designed for this dress over the next month, collars, hand knits and more.

Hello hello! My eyes see a beautiful woman with a great purpose in the first dress I not just want to buy but will buy. I think you’re right Summer, this dress suits women of all shapes and since I wouldn’t show off my legs and like the design, this dress is perfect for me. And I love the little splash of colour. Will it be available in other colour accents?

Ashe tagged this Alternative fabric

Oh yeah, I’d prefer a non glossy fabric too, but have no clue for an alternative. 🙂

Oh my god oh my god I’m already in love with this dress!! I’m looking forward to this month!

Hey everyone, we were also thinking of making it from an organic cotton sateen, which might also be a nice alternative. I love the silk-hemp but I like to “dress up” if you will. But I’ll show you how to “dress it down” as well. Unbelievably exciting and I know we can raise some good money for Charity: Water and have “Uniform Project Community” wells. How cool would that be?

Let me be clear that I think it’s awesome; I was just thinking about what I would prefer for a versatile everyday LBD, and a fabric with a sheen strikes me as fancier than I’d like. But man, I want this dress and can’t wait to see what you do with it!

Oh my God, that’s a gorgeous dress on a gorgeous woman! Welcome to UP & good luck! I’m really excited for March. Hope we can help you get to 10k! Great deal with Payless btw.

I have to say it again, I am super stoked…and I also like that you told us what you are listening to! You should definitely keep doing that this month.

That’s totally a compliment. Love the flounce. Love the bloomers. Love the peek of color. Water, water, may it flow everywhere, that all may have a drink.

Farmer Beth – thanks for letting us know about the hiccup. We’ll get Marko’s page fixed. And Ruby – definitely going to be going through my song list. I feel like every day needs to have it’s own theme song. 🙂

I love a good transformable dress, especially for travel, and this looks really versatile! I agree that it might be better for business or everyday wear in a less shiny fabric, but I will reserve judgment until after I see how you work it in March. Really looking forward to this month! Can I request that you try it with petticoats? I love to use my petticoats, but most modern dresses are the wrong length or the wrong weight fabric, although this one might just be a good match!
