Day 1

Back in Black

Hello devoted UP readers, welcome to November! I’m so happy to get started and see what I can come up with to inspire you all to rethink your closet.

I worked with former Montrealer, current Brooklynite, designer of Study NY, Tara St. James on the design of my dress. Right from the beginning I threw a curveball at her when I said. “Tara, I want a long dress. I’m over short dresses, I’m feeling long”. Holy diva. We talked about how long “long” actually is and how to make the dress versatile, check out a full breakdown of the dress on the dress details page.

But most importantly we’re raising money for Free the Children. I first heard of this organization WAY back in 1998 while I was in high school. I was one of 30 finalists for the Canadian Merit Scholarship and I remember reading about previous winners. One who caught my attention was Craig Kielburger who started Free the Children at the ripe old age of fourteen. Yes. Fourteen.

Then I realized I likely wouldn’t win the scholarship (UPDATE:got to the finals, didn’t win) but I was blown away by what this then boy/now man had done. My goal for November is to raise $8,500 to help Free the Children build a school inΒ Bagad, India.

Love, Love, Love it! I love that the dress is long and I love your cause. I do have one question….how do you wear a bra with that dress since the back has such a deep V?

so excited to see what you do with a long dress….. πŸ™‚

Love it! I was really, really hoping for a long dress soon! I totally love the cut, and I can already imagine possibilities galore for it! I can’t wait to see what you do with it. πŸ˜€

(@ J – I don’t know about Angie, but I don’t wear a bra, so the deep V in the back doesn’t bother me, and it opens up LOTS and LOTS of possibilities for design. <3 )

Can’t wait to see what you do! I’m not sure if all of the Pilots adhere to the same rules as Sheena. Perhaps one day you could let us know what limitations you are imposing on yourself (second hand stuff only, donations, etc.)

I dont wear short skirts so I am really looking forward to seeing what you will do.

Yeah! Excited to get started! To answer questions:
– The dress is reversible, so the deep back can also be a deep front.
– RE the bra: It will be a non-issue when I’m layering the dress…when not layering…wear a cute bra! I’m also a big fan of sports bras in this situation…
– RE the “rules”: We’re generally following the same rules as Sheena. I have a HUGE collection of vintage in my personal wardrobe, built up over many years, so I’ll be incorporating a lot of those goodies.

You look fantastic Angie… we couldn’t have found anyone better to rep the long dress and “make it work”. *And just to clarify, while I may call Brooklyn home now, I’ll always be a Montrealer at heart! Good luck!

What an entry! Long dress…wow! Wow! I didn’t think anyone would go there! Thanks to UP Tara St. James is one of my faves! Loved India’s outfit and Sheena’s accessories. I am super-excited for this month and I’m sure you’ll do great. Very good cause, too. I’m just reading up on it. Go Angie!

A truly classicly beautify and amazing design. I can’t wait to see what you variations you make to the dress throughout the month. I love your selection of the elegant long dress and the dramatically differently necklines. The Tuxedo neckline was totally unexpected and was a complete surprise. I love the boots, too. πŸ˜€

Wow! You’re brave I wouldn’t know where to begin. Looking forward to the year ahead… GOOD LUCK!!!

Very interesting… because of the strong flaps in the back, it makes it look like you’re definitely wearing it ‘backwards’. Could you tuck them under?? (not sure what that would do to the collar part at your neck. Anyway…this is quite the challenge! Good luck! πŸ™‚

I’m really looking forward to seeing what you do with a LONG dress! With the buttons all the way up you’ll be able to wear it fully closed or open it up all the way like a coat, and everything in between.

Welcome Angie! I was looking forward to a long dress too. But I have to confess, I don’t like the pattern at all. But that doesn’t matter at all either. So I’m just really eager to see what you can do with it. I’m sure you’ll surprise me given on your Etsy shop. πŸ™‚

WOW! I think the length makes this a brave pick, I am so excited to see what you do with it!!

Funny, lots of people say you’re “brave” for doing the long dress, but I’ve thought the short ones were brave. I prefer long skirts/dresses b/c I can’t wear anything to work above my knees (and I spend more time @ work!). I’m excited about this; finally something I could wear! Welcome!

A long time ago

Wendie

Oh, and I hope you’ll tell us when you’re wearing each fabric so we can see what the difference looks like….

Your etsy shop is wonderful and so I cannot wait to see what you do this month. I am especially curious because the dress looks a little baggy to me…almost like it is a size too big. I am sure you must have lots of ideas in mind that will show me how it’s done. Good luck!
