Day One, One Day.
So here I am, India in the dress. The “styling” today is simple, everything I have been wearing everyday, plus the dress. The necklaces, the rings, the bracelets and the shoes, they comfort me while I wear this somewhat daunting dress. I feel like I need to name the dress, but like my friend’s parents waited to name her, I should probably get to know it before I name it. I chose the school at Blair Grocery as my charity knowing of it first hand, and thinking the community of the lower 9th ward as deserving of it, I feel the school is a cause I can trust to support. Also having just graduated from an alternative high school myself, I was glad to find the school at Blair Grocery to hold similar teaching ethics. I hope you support the school however you can, and of course, thanks for reading!

You couldn’t bother to smile? I think the new idea of a cause a month is great, but give us some motivation to like you and your cause… sorry, but I’d be more inclined to donate if you looked a little more enthusiastic about what you’re doing…

stunning. the sentiment behind your accessories, cause and the dress itself is absolutely divine.

@anonymous Be nice! India is 17 and awesome, just a little stoic and shy. Remember when you were 17?!
We want to welcome her to the UP family with all the love and support we’ve seen in the past year.
I love the cause, I love the pics and (obviously) I love the dress!
Go India!!!

You call the dress daunting. I think it’s lovely and covet it already. I wonder if you would feel daunted if the dress wasn’t black? If it was white, or yellow? Do you often wear black?

This picture makes me want to sit down and hear all of the story you have to tell….and to be compelling is exactly what the whole point of all this is, so this is perfect. India, you are perfect. Tara, you are perfect. Sheena, you are perfect. Well done, ladies.
A long time ago
India, Tara and Sheena are perfect. And if you’re the Bahar, whose Bahar Shapar Ahimsa Silk jacket I treasure, you’re perfect too.

I have to say it’s gonna take more than just a pretty face with good intentions to get me personally interested – India certainly sounded good on paper but looks pretty vacuous if you ask me – the idea is lacking something – not sure what, but hope it goes well…

UP is a big deal after last year. So you’re gonna get tougher criticism I know that. I feel a bit depressed and confused at the moment and I was hoping my visit here would help bring some perspective back in my life, and may even ‘inspiration’ and ‘action’. But I feel even sadder and more comatose now and I’m not sure if the sad eyes or the sharp comments. play nice everyone.

Hello India! and…welcome back U.P.!!!!!!!!!! Stunning background choice, truly complements your lovely hair and draws attention to your LBD. Really loving the necklace! What I found exciting and captivating about UP is that it wasn’t a 17
year who looked like a model – it was a woman in her 30s from a rich
cultural background and with an even richer life experience giving free
reign to her creativity, it was sexy, it was playful, it was all
encompassing and inclusive.
This looks and sounds elitist; ageist and totally boring. It’s not
coming from a place of authenticity and it shows.
A long time ago
Love the mismatched shoes and the red-white-black scheme for the accessories! This is a great dress – I look forward to a lot of great combos from it!
A long time ago
I’m just thrilled to see you here, India! You look beautiful and like no other, which is exactly how you should look. I truly look forward to seeing what you do each day with this dress. All the best to you and your meaningful cause! xo

@disappointed, don’t be so quick to judge, it’s only day one and did you read anything about her cause and the reasons why she chose it? – the fact that she is so young only makes this more impressive. How many 17 yr olds do you know that would dedicate a month of their time to a good cause? The future of our existence depends on forward thinking teenagers. She’s young, she’s hot and clearly she has a heart of gold, the only thing that anyone should be disappointed in is that they’re not her.

Welcome back UP. Hello India! Congrats on a beautiful Day#1. On a separate note- why does the title read Day 12 Aug 12. Plus the site is a little glitchy on my computer…..just wondering if others had issues too. Either way-happy for year#2.
A long time ago
@anushka et al, yes we’re aware of the glitches, working through some technical issues on the backend. Will be fixing up shortly, thanks for your patience!
A long time ago
couldn’t you smile? 🙁
A long time ago
I’ve always wished I looked like India: Gorgeous freckles, fiery red hair… India, you’re just great. You’ve got style and imaination, and you’re helping a great cause. I ‘m looking forward to your dailies!
A long time ago
@ the commenters who wanted a model spread. I remember being 17 and I would not have had the guts to do this. and I know what some of the rich popular kids had to say about the fact that I had only two outfits to wear (because we were really poor) and had to accessorize my clothes by myself. The fact that India does this with wit and style shows a great deal of courage and self-assurance. And her writing about this is very honest. I’m very impressed –

Smile hun!
A long time ago
@ impressed hun wake up and smell the 21 st century! many many 17 year olds would do it to get their cute mug out there and promote whatever business they’re intending on pushing next and nothing does it better nowdays than ‘doing it for the kids’ –
A long time ago
@unimpressedwithimpressed– please, just stop. if you don’t have anything nice to day, don’t say anything at all… how could you eve think that the uniform project would choose someone even slightly questionable to be their next pilot? how? this is all authentic, and i agree with impressed– haha: notimpressedwithnotimpressedwithimpressed, what a handful.
A long time ago
Don’t know who said you should smile, but they are just being silly. You look killer sexy in this photo!

Love your hair, adore your shoes.
🙂

Great cause! We’re behind you 100%.
A long time ago
Well, don’t look so excited…
A long time ago
I have to admit, one of the things that I loved about the first year of the UP was that she always greeted me with an ubeat smile. It made me feel good. This first day didn’t make me feel particularly excited. Also, I would love to have seen the back…
A long time ago
such a fabulous dress! can’t wait to see how you change it up each day. congrats on doing this, i wish you lots of luck 🙂
A long time ago
i love that outfit i want that outfit i need that outfit
A long time ago
Stunning dress – and you look stunning in it.
If I had half hte bravery you’re exhibiting by doing this, and I was doing it too, I probably wouldn’t smile either. However nice my smile looks in person it always ends up looking slightly terrifying in print! 🙂
A long time ago
I prefer last year. She was more beautiful and nicer. You look not happy to do this campaign.
